Frequently Asked Questions

What is TransitWorks?

TransitWorks is a not for profit organization that seeks to improve the quality and increase the use of transit in the Boston metropolitan region.

When did TransitWorks start?

TransitWorks began in 1997 as a collaborative initiative, joining the business community, local municipalities, and other interests under a single umbrella organization. The initiative realized great success from 1997 to 2001. TransitWorks collaborators continued to see the opportunity and promise of the program, and re-established it three years later, in 2004.

What is a “Charlie”?

Named after the unfortunate hero in the song “Charlie on the MTA”, Charlies are TransitWorks volunteers. Click here to read more about Charlies.

How can I help?

You can help by signing up as a TransitWorks volunteer or “Charlie”, and/or signing up to receive our e-mail announcements and newsletters.

What do volunteers do?

Volunteers collect vital information about what they experience as they use the MBTA system. They are the eyes and ears of the MBTA, and serve as critical TransitWorks ambassadors. To sign up, click here.

If I sign up to be a TransitWorks Charlie, will TransitWorks sell or trade my personal information?

NO. The identity and contact details of TransitWorks Charlies will not be shared with any third party without their written consent.

Why did TransitWorks conduct the MBTA Ridership Survey?

The MBTA Ridership Survey is designed to determine overall levels of MBTA customer satisfaction and what issues are of greatest importance to the MBTA ridership. This survey will help the MBTA improve the quality of our region's transit.

Can I take the MBTA Ridership Survey?

The next ridership survey is anticipated for fall 2008. By signing up for the TransitWorks email list, you will be kept up to date on this and other opportunities to provide feedback.

Can I contact TransitWorks directly with comments about the quality of the MBTA service?

Yes! You can e-mail us at transitworks@transitworks.org, call us at (617) 502-6247, or fill out this on-line form.
