128 Business Council In 1985, three organizations - GTE Laboratories, Polaroid, and The Nelson Companies - got together and funded a study of the Route 128 West area between Route 2 and Route 9. The study concluded that gridlock conditions would affect the Route 128 West region if strategies to reduce congestion and increase transportation options were not put in place. The 128 Business Council is a non-profit public/private partnership that was formed to help reduce traffic congestion on Route 128/West by providing alternative transportation services and information. The Council also works with state and federal transportation agencies on behalf of member businesses. The Council is funded by member companies that are committed to the economic vitality of the Route 128/West area. In 2004, the 128 Business Council is still providing important alternative transportation services and information for its member companies including shuttles in Waltham Needham and Lexington. |

Boston Transportation Department The Boston Transportation Department is responsible for regulating traffic and parking on local streets in the City of Boston and it accomplishes this task through a combination of planning, engineering and enforcement measures. BTD utilizes engineering practices aimed at providing safe and effective traffic circulation on Boston's streets. The Department also implements and enforces curbside parking regulations, and collects and adjudicates the fines and fees resulting from parking tickets and tows. In addition, BTD incorporates Boston's interests into state and federal roadway developments, including the Central Artery/Tunnel project, and works to promote alternative modes of transportation for Downtown commuters. BTD's initiatives must respect historic preservation, yet work toward maintaining access, managing parking and balancing the transportation needs of both the residential and business communities in Boston. |
